Mountain States Health Alliance Achieves Dramatic Improvements in Glycemic Control with the Comprehensive Insulin-dosing Software Platform from Glytec

Thirteen-hospital system serving 29 counties in Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky, and North Carolina applauds the solution for its integration, usability, and impact on patient care.

Greenville, SC — Glytec, a clinical information technology company dedicated to glycemic management solutions for hospitals and patients, today announced that Mountain States Health Alliance (MSHA) has experienced unprecedented clinical results in just the first 60 days of use of the inpatient glycemic control platform, Glucommander™.

Utilizing Glytec’s FDA-cleared intravenous (IV) and subcutaneous (SubQ) insulin dosing modules, MSHA has achieved dramatic and measurable clinical results:

  • Hypoglycemia was reduced by 89%
  • Patients with blood glucose values in target range increased by 56%
  • Average blood glucose values were reduced by 27%

Andrew S. Rhinehart, MD, FACP, CDE, BC-ADM, CDTC, Medical Director and Diabetologist at Johnston Memorial Diabetes Care Center, has helped lead the initiative with Glytec and stated, “In the last few years we have all become aware of the importance of inpatient glycemic management and its connection to patient outcomes. Glucose control has been a challenge for hospitals throughout the country, and naturally it’s been no different at MSHA, despite the great efforts of our clinicians. There is growing acceptance of the fact that paper protocols, and even static electronic order sets, can only take you so far. The options for making significant and sustainable improvements have been limited until now. Given the great implications to our patients, as well as the changing reimbursement environment, and once we became aware of Glytec’s unique approach, we elected to take a leadership role in this area, pioneering an advanced approach to standardizing glycemic management alongside Glytec. Obviously the results have been exceptionally good thus far, and the speed with which we saw improved outcomes was very impressive.”

Bob Leonard, President & CEO at Glytec, affirmed, “In collaboration with MSHA, our clients, and experts throughout the healthcare community, we are creating a revolution in glycemic management. We were the first to introduce a computerized algorithm for IV insulin dosing in 2006, and we’ve had a great deal of success in improving outcomes in ICU patients over the years. In addition, we are the only company to offer a solution FDA-cleared for SubQ and Pediatrics insulin dosing, thus enabling us to provide a comprehensive inpatient solution. We are both fortunate and thrilled to work with MSHA as we refine this advanced approach. Our goal is to standardize glycemic management for hospitals, and most importantly, for their patients.”

Standardization of care has been the theme at MSHA during the rollout with Glytec. Patients come into the prescribed target range quickly and maintain glycemic control, whether they are in the ICU or out on the patient care floors. Whether being treated with IV insulin or SubQ insulin doses, the glycemic management at MSHA is standardized, and the patients are under control.

Tamera Parsons, Vice President, Quality & Patient Safety, at MSHA added, “After a detailed evaluation of various options, culminating in a formal survey, it was determined that only Glytec offered the glycemic management solution that would allow us to address the needs of our patients throughout the hospital. The breadth and depth of their offering is unique, and the collaboration with our nursing and pharmacy staff on this initiative has been tremendous. The expertise and dedication of their team, working alongside our teams, has made a huge difference. I’m proud of the staff at MSHA, proud to be working with Glytec, and more importantly proud of the impact we’re making on patient care.”
