WellStar Health System Expands Use of Glytec’s eGlycemic Management System®

Georgia’s largest health system is heightening the safety and efficacy of insulin therapy across its network of hospitals.

Known nationally for innovative care models, WellStar Health System, in partnership with Glytec, is taking proactive measures to optimize glycemic management for hospitalized patients. The not-for-profit health system is expanding use of Glytec’s patented and FDA-cleared eGlycemic Management System® (eGMS®) beyond its two largest facilities, WellStar Kennestone Hospital and WellStar Atlanta Medical Center, to an additional eight facilities in the Greater Atlanta and surrounding area.

A study published in the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology (JDST) provides further evidence that Glytec’s patented eGlycemic Management System® (eGMS®) is safer and more effective than traditional approaches to managing basal-bolus therapy. With some 40% of hospitalized patients receiving insulin therapy during their stay, the consequences of inadequate and imprecise dosing — including increased risk of complications and mortality, longer lengths of stay, and higher readmission rates — pose significant cost and quality improvement opportunities for hospitals.

Putting Epic’s EHR to Work: Hawaii Pacific Executives on the Intersection of Health IT & Quality

We started on this journey because we identified patients with diabetes and their comorbidities as top reasons for readmissions and longer length of stay.

These patients are also at higher risk for postoperative complications. We looked at how our system was managing hyperglycemia. We looked at glucose values for all of our patients. The EHR makes that possible. Looking at the data, I was quite concerned. We had a lot of patients with hyperglycemia. There have been a lot of conversations at the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program meetings about hyperglycemia. Starting from there, we found a program [Glytec] to integrate into our EHR — something that could help with hyperglycemia management.
